Abstract:

Ultrasonography has a non-invasive character and it determines the avoidance of ionizing radiation of the imaging, which could provide for this method important place in the periodontal imagistics. The purpose of this study was to asses the high frequency ultrasound imaging for periodontal examination.Material and methods: The device used was an ultrasonic scanner with a frequency of 20MHz on an experimental model represented of pig jaws. The selected teeth were imaged with the scanner and duplicate model was made at distance. These measurements were compared to transgingival and direct measurements of the same teeth following reflection of the soft tissue. Results: The ultrasonic measurements showed better reproductibility than either of the two methods and they were in better agreement with diect, probing measurements than trangingval probing with direct measurements. Conclusions: The future of ultrasonograhy in periodontology is promising since it gives accurate and repeatable results but further human studies are necessary, since we used an experimental animal model.
