USE OF HYPNOSIS IN DENTAL MEDICINE

Abstract:

Nowadays hypnosis is in frequent use in all areas of medicine. It should be said that its influence in dental medicine could be observed almost immediately. The areas of intervention are various: Improvement of patient-dentist relationship and, consequently, increased cooperation by the patient. Induction of relaxation before and during treatment thus decreasing the patient’s fear and anxiety. Treatment of dental phobia and avoidance of dental treatment. Preparation of the patient for local and general anesthesia. Introduction of analgesia and pain control. Control of bleeding and control of salivation flow. Reduction of discomfort and enhancement of post-operative healing.Treatment of excessive gagging reflex.Treatment of nocive habits and parafunctions such as bruxism, thumb sucking, etc.Treatment of patients allergic to local anesthetics. Facilitation of patient’s adaptability to orthodontic appliances or dentures. In addition to different aspects of behavioral modification such as gradual exposure to dental media, hypnosis has become an important tool in the dental armamentarium.
