Prevalence of occlusal asymmetry at the molar level

Abstract:

The epidemiological studies concerning the occlusal status, conducted for Romanian patients, do not provide data concerning occlusal asymmetries.
Materials and method: In order to estimate the magnitude of occlusal asymmetries at the molar level, we performed a retrospective study on a group of 384 patients (average age 10.11 years), without previous orthodontic treatment, who requested orthodontic treatment in the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics of the Gr. T. Popa University of Iasi.
Results: In the studied group, the asymmetry of molar relations in the saggital plane was registered in 24.7% of the patients. From a statistic perspective, we obtained significant correlations between the asymmetry of the molar relations and the malocclusion classes. We did not obtain any statistically significant associations between the molar asymmetries in the saggital plane and the sex of the patients, the ecologic origin, the age group and the dentition type.
