Abstract:

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of maxilla and mandibular particularities on sagittal and vertical jaw relations. A cross sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of patients, including only subjects with permanent dentition and presence of at least all four first permanent molars. Data was collected from patients’ medical records and by cephalometric analysis. Bivariate regression showed that mandible development plays the main role in intermaxillary relations, especially in the vertical plane, but also in the sagittal plane. The mandibular sagittal position explained about 25% of the variation of sagittal jaw relation, while mandibular inclination explained about 80% of the variance of vertical jaw relation. In conclusion, sagittal and vertical jaw relations should be analyzed before dental treatment beginning, as it may help decide on the optimal treatment conduct with the best outcome.
